In addition to the many city parks and recreational spots, Washougal is within proximity to some of the most scenic and breathtaking wildlife refuges and state parks, such as Franz Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and Reed Island State Park. If you’ve ever wanted to visit an actual Lewis & Clark site, Captain William Clark Park in Washougal is one of the few places where you can camp just steps from one of Lewis and Clark’s actual campsites. Be sure to also take a trip to Parker’s Landing Historical Park, Washougal’s place of birth. Boat launches, picnic areas under the harbor and nearby trails can be found at Parker’s Landing. No visit to Washougal—also known as the “Gateway to the Gorge”—would be complete without a trip to the Columbia River Gorge. The gorge’s National Scenic Area starts just east of Washougal and includes stops at several parks, hiking trails, the historical Sternwheeler, and the golf course at the Skamania Lodge.
